What Age Should a Child Visit a Dentist?

What Age Should A Child Visit A Dentist Blog
Many parents wait until their kids have a full set of baby teeth or until something is wrong before they visit the dentist for the first time. Different ideas about when this appointment should occur are floating around, but what do the experts say? At what age should your child first visit the dentist?

Their First Birthday— Or Sooner

Yes, you read that right. Your child should have their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting, whichever comes first. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the American Dental Association (ADA), and pediatric dentists all recommend this.

No teeth at 12 months old? Your child should still see the dentist regardless of how many teeth they have or do not have. This early dental care is more important than you may think.

Why Visit the Dentist So Early?

Of course, monitoring teeth for cavities is a major reason that kids need to see the dentist, but these early visits are about so much more.

Setting a Positive Foundation

Introducing kids to the dental environment early can help them to associate these routine visits with a positive experience. They will see the sights and sounds throughout the office, meet the dentist and staff, and learn what it is all about.

Kicking this off early helps the young patient to feel more comfortable and be at ease with the dentist as they grow.

Early Detection

Early visits can lead to early detection. Kids are susceptible to oral health issues even before they have teeth. So, catching these things early can help prevent more serious problems later. This includes tooth decay, gum disease, and developmental issues.

Expert Guidance

Knowing how to brush and floss your teeth as an adult is one thing, but knowing how to care for a child’s oral health with very few teeth, if any, is another. Visiting the dentist early presents parents with the opportunity to learn how to properly care for their child’s teeth and gums now and as they grow. Learn the right techniques to use, what to avoid, and bad habits that need to be addressed.

If you have any questions or concerns, this is the perfect time to talk about it.

What Happens at a Child’s First Dental Visit?

This first visit is a chance for the dentist and team to meet you and your child. You can expect to remain present during the entire visit.

There will be a discussion about the significance of baby teeth and how to properly maintain them. This may include proper cleaning and even dietary recommendations.

A physical exam of the mouth, head, and neck will help the dentist to see if your child’s oral health and development are headed in the right direction. If any areas need to be addressed, the dentist will discuss them with you.

For those who do have teeth, they will be cleaned, fluoride treatment will be given, and sealants will be placed over the tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should babies start using toothpaste?  Toothpaste can usually be introduced around the age of two, though it is always a good idea to discuss this directly with your pediatric dentist. Be sure to choose a type designed for kids and use only a tiny amount until your child can fully spit the toothpaste out.  Is it common for toddlers to get cavities? Sadly, tooth decay is quite common in young children. Many will have at least one cavity by the time they are between the ages of two and five.
